Osaka Art Galleries: Picture of the National Museum of ArtArt galleries in Osaka are just what you would expect in a major Japanese city, and more besides. With innumerable Japanese pieces on exhibit, visitors to the galleries can also enjoy exhibitions with calligraphy displays, historic ceramics, modern sculptures and local paintings.

Of particular importance is the Osaka National Museum of Art, which was founded in 1977 and clearly shows how art in Japan has developed over the years. Also of interest is the enticing Municipal Museum of Fine Art, where you will find in excess of 3,000 lacquerware exhibits, amongst Chinese paintings and local artefacts. The aim of this museum is to show the development of Japanese art throughout history, as it relates to other global art movements. Rotating centrepiece exhibitions at the National Museum of Art are supplemented by local and world artists, especially contemporary works. Its location in the park where Expo '70 was held makes it a hub for other cultural activities throughout the year.

This engaging art museum is located in Tennoji Park and has a number of interesting permanent exhibitions focusing on traditional Chinese art, calligraphy and Buddhist images. Contemporary and ancient Japanese art stand side by side at the Municipal Museum of Fine Art, together with a comprehensive collection of Korean art.

Osaka Art Galleries: Museum of Oriental Ceramics - 1-1-26 Nakanoshima, Kita-ku, Osaka, Japan, JP

This modern complex on Nakanoshima Island, in the middle of the Dojima River, has a fantastic collection of almost 3,000 pieces of ceramics from China, Korea and Japan. Although not all of them can be displayed at the same time, the pieces are amongst the finest in the world and the Museum of Oriental Ceramics is within easy reach of Osaka. This high-tech facility does an excellent job of showcasing these masterpieces, with the use of lighting and display techniques.
